About Twin Cities Catalyst Music

Twin Cities Catalyst Music (Catalyst) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization with the mission to provide young people with equitable access to see, experience, and participate in the Twin Cities music community.

Catalyst fulfills its mission through The Garage in Burnsville, the all-ages (no 18+ or 21+ restrictions), substance-free, live music venue, recording studio, and educational facilities. The organization works to empower young people by providing them their own spaces to perform, participate in music education programs, learn valuable employment skills, partake in leadership opportunities, and engage with their local community. In addition to live performances, the organization offers virtual and in-person free music education programs focused on songwriting, performance, recording, videography, and music production.

  • Job Title: Live Sound Engineer

    Job Class: Part time, non-exempt

    Hours per week: Flexible, per event basis

    Reports To: Audio Manager

    Start Date: ASAP

    Starting Wage: $18 per hour

    Location: The Garage (75 Civic Center Parkway, Burnsville, MN 55337)

    Summary

    Live Sound Engineers are responsible for operating and maintaining the live sound system equipment at The Garage music venue. They are also responsible for any band practices, recitals, miscellaneous rentals, and other various events that require technical support at The Garage. This position is a part-time and non-exempt (hourly) position.

    Key Functions and Responsibilities

    Manage sound and lighting for Catalyst Music shows at The Garage, band rehearsals, recitals and private event rentals

    Respond to emails regarding questions and information for each event (shows and rentals)

    Perform maintenance on sound equipment when needed

    Time management for all shows including prompt soundcheck and following set timing

    Professional demeanor as a leader, role model, advisor, and mentor in the community

    Other duties as assigned

    Minimum Qualifications

    Experience managing sound and lighting for concerts and events

    Punctuality: arrive to work on time

    Flexible schedule to work nights and weekends

    Excellent verbal, written, and organizational skills

    Technologically proficient in Google Suite (Gmail, Drive, Sheets, Docs, Slides)

    Strong communication skills with guests and team members

    First aid experience; helpful but not required

  • Job Title: Manager on Duty (MOD)

    Job Class: Part time, non-exempt

    Reports To: General Manager

    Start Date: ASAP

    Starting Wage: $18 per hour

    Location: Hybrid - some work can be done remotely but the majority of work happens at The Garage (75 Civic Center Parkway, Burnsville, MN 55337)

    Key Functions and Responsibilities

    Manage events at The Garage, including concerts, shows, private event rentals, etc

    Hire, train, schedule and supervise venue staff

    Manage food and beverage inventory as needed for The Cafe at The Garage

    Manage catering services for performers as needed

    Ensure accurate payroll for venue staff - clock in/out

    Communicating and enforcing all security regulations and protocols

    Prepare opening tasks for The Garage venue including building walk-through and team management

    Ensure safe and comfortable environment for staff and audience

    Perform closing tasks, including band payments and building maintenance

    Other duties as assigned

    Minimum Qualifications

    Experience working in a music venue or similar environment

    Experience managing and training staff

    Punctuality: arrive to work on time

    Flexible schedule to work nights and weekends

  • Job Title: Venue Staff

    Job Class: Part time. $15 per hour, non-exempt.

    We are seeking excited and available music lovers to join our venue staff! Must be able to work weekends in Burnsville (at The Garage). Read more about our organization and services at https://catalystmusic.org/. Days and hours vary by week.

    Key Functions, Roles & Responsibilities

    Working in conjunction with our other staff members in order to host safe and successful all ages shows.

    Welcome performers & guests into our spaces

    Perform security check with metal detector

    Security detail for the outdoors

    Guard the Green Room, making sure the performers aren’t bombarded with unwanted guests

    Setting up barricades to create a secure outdoor patio

    Observe the show, be the lookout in case anyone is in need of assistance

    Potential opportunities to learn more positions: Box Office and/or Concessions

    Other duties as assigned.

  • Board Member of Twin Cities Catalyst Music

    3-5 hours per month

    Organization Summary: The mission of Catalyst Music is to provide equitable access and opportunities for young people to see, experience, and participate in the Twin Cities music community. This is achieved through Catalyst Music’s all-ages venues, which host concerts and its after school music programming focused on production, recording, songwriting, and performance.

    The Garage, is an all-ages music venue, recording studio, and educational facility located in Burnsville, MN.

    In 2019, Catalyst Music hosted an organizational record of 114 live performances across the Twin Cities metro for over 13,500 artists and attendees. Its after school music programming has continued to grow, now including Burnsville Youth Collaborative at The Garage, Video Production Collaborative, Booking Team, and Catalyst Music Council.

    Catalyst Music is at an exciting point in its young history. Before COVID-19, we were adding programs, locations, and innovative ways to connect young people with music. Now, we’re reopening our programs to bring in more young people from our communities, pay even more young people from our communities, offer new ways to support and empower youth to create their own spaces and music ecosystems that are equitable, welcoming, and just.

    Catalyst Music needs help to do this. We have a dedicated board of directors, but have openings and a need for more viewpoints and life experiences, which we highlight below. Reach out with any questions!

    As the highest leadership body of the organization and to satisfy its fiduciary duties, the board is responsible for:

    determining the mission of the organization and understanding its collective purpose

    selecting, supporting, and evaluating the performance of the Executive Director

    strategic and organizational planning

    ensuring strong fiduciary oversight and financial management

    fundraising and resource development

    approving and monitoring the organization’s programs and services

    enhancing the organization’s public image

    assessing its own performance as the governing body of the organization

    ensuring legal and ethical integrity

    Responsibilities of Individual Board Members

    know the organization’s mission, policies, programs, and needs as well as understand its collective purpose

    faithfully read and understand the organization’s financial statements and board materials in advance of meetings

    serve as active advocates and ambassadors for the organization

    fully engage in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary for the organization to advance its mission

    leverage connections, networks, and resources to develop collective action to achieve the organization’s mission

    give a meaningful personal financial donation

    help identify personal connections that can benefit the organization’s fundraising and reputational standing, and influence public policy

    prepare for, attend, and conscientiously participate in board meetings

    participate fully in one or more committees or task forces

    engage in learning opportunities to better understand the community we serve

    respect the experiences of all who bring their voices and lived experiences into the boardroom and the organization
